Effect of the rotational ground motion on the response of slender towers
The effect of the rotational (rocking) component of seismic ground motion on the response of slender, tower-shaped structures has been investigated. The rotational motion has been obtained by differentiating random field of strong ground motion with respect to spatial coordinate. Substantial contribution (about 30 to 40%) of rotational motion in the bending moment in the shaft of r/c chimney has been observed (see figure below).
